There is continual changing demand for different skills in industries, especially with increased use of AI. Currently, applications per job advertisement are higher than ever, so how do you differentiate yourself:
Short and Sharp Resume
Employers don’t have time to read a ten page resume about everything you have ever done. Keep it short and get straight to the point. It is better to have a 1-2 page resume.
It is also important to consider HOW employers read a resume – in the shape of a capital F. Most of your important wording should be at the top on the left-hand side or midway on the left-hand side.
In your resume, and also your cover letter, remember to incorporate key words from the adverts.
Spruce up your LinkedIn
Employers love to see you on LinkedIn and look at your profile to see your past experience and skills. They also like to see items like volunteering experience, showing that you care and want to help. The blurb at the top of your LinkedIn page is key to define who you are as an individual, make sure it is professional and personable.
Highlight your strong skills
Leverage your existing transferrable skills, and talk about points that are asked for in the job adverts. If you have done this type of work before, even if in a different industry – highlight it. Also consider what additional skills you have from your previous industry, that you can bring to this new role?
Strong Cover Letter
Represent your research on the company you are applying for and talk less about yourself and what you can bring to the employer.
