Anyone can recruit right? Anyone can whack a job advert on Seek correct?
Yes and no.
Yes, anyone can place an advert and interview candidates but no, not anyone can perform a skilled and scientifically based program to get you the best person possible for the job.
Apparently CV fraud is on the rise. False education claims, inflated qualifications, and untrue course completion dates are just some of the factors that can come into play when recruiting.
Did you know that on average a recruiter reviews a resume in just 7 seconds?
How can we possibly know if they are good or bad candidate in 7 seconds? – Well the truth is that we don’t put much scope into the accuracy of the CV.
Recruitment involves using a wide arrangement of techniques to ensure that we can build up a solid picture of the candidate. It may start with the resume, but it encompasses so much more. Telephone interviewing is an integral part of recruitment, most jobs required solid telephone skills, and then there is the face to face interview. Do you know what questions to ask? Quite apart from the candidate taking umbrage and reporting you if you inadvertently ask discriminatory questions, do you know how to actually gauge their skills, personality and value from a question? Recruiters do.
What about personality – how do you gauge if they are outgoing or introverted and what about the non-reliance of personality testing – how do you counteract that? Recruiters know how to.
What about skills, do you know how to discern their levels of skill? Do you have any testing facilities? Recruiters do.
Do you ever set a work sample test? Do you know what would be a good test to set for different types of roles? Recruiters do.
And finally how often do you recruit, interview and select? Once in a blue moon? Recruiters are doing this day in and day out – that is how we get so good at it. We are masters at matching organisations and managers to employees. We don’t always get it right though, because our product is imperfect – we are dealing with human beings – we won’t always get it right, but we will have the testing, predictive validity and skills to back up a strong candidate.
Recruitment is a hard gig, but when you do it every day for 15 years, use the latest research and technology and have clients that come back again and again, you get very good at it – that’s how we can look at a CV in 7 seconds!
